What is Reiki?

Reiki, pronounced ray-key, means “Universal Life Force Energy” in Japanese. The word comes from REI (universal life) and KI (energy). This healing practice, or "laying of hands," channels pure, intelligent energy to restore balance and well-being. Though rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui in the late 1800s, Reiki is rooted in ancient energy-healing traditions and is known by many names across cultures, Sekhem in Ancient Egypt, Prana in India, Aṣẹ in the Yoruba tradition, and Chi or Qi in China.

Reiki is gentle yet powerful, supporting healing on physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels. When your life force energy is low, you may feel stressed or unwell; when it flows freely, you feel balanced, vibrant, and at peace. Reiki helps clear energy blockages and restore harmony, whether in person or from a distance, and can complement medical treatments while promoting deep relaxation and holistic well-being.

What can Reiki do for you?

Reiki can help reduce stress, calm your nervous system, and support your body’s natural healing processes. It may ease tension, improve sleep, and relieve feelings of being overwhelmed, anxious, or emotionally heavy. Many people notice that they feel more grounded, clearer, and more connected to themselves after a session.

While Reiki is not a replacement for medical care, it can be a powerful complement, offering gentle support during times of pain, illness, burnout, grief, or major life transitions.

How Reiki Helps

Reiki supports your body’s natural ability to heal by helping your energy become more balanced and relaxed. It works with your “life force” energy, the subtle energy that flows through and around your body, so your whole system can function more smoothly and feel more at ease.

When this energy is blocked, low, or out of balance, you might notice it as stress, anxiety, tension, fatigue, or even physical discomfort. Reiki gently directs calming, supportive energy where it’s most needed, helping to clear stagnant areas and restore a smoother, more balanced flow.

These energetic imbalances can build up over time from things like chronic stress, difficult emotions, past trauma, overwork, illness, or draining work or home environments and relationships. Reiki offers a safe, noninvasive way to unwind some of that buildup, creating more space for relief, resilience, and an overall sense of well‑being in your body and mind.

What does a Reiki session feel like?

One of the first things people notice with Reiki is a deep sense of relaxation and ease. Calming the nervous system allows the body’s own healing abilities to awaken and flow more naturally. Reiki can soothe heavy emotions, melt away tension, and help release stagnant or negative energy. Just one session may feel as restorative as several hours of deep sleep, leaving you lighter, more centered, and better able to meet life’s challenges with greater balance and well-being.

Reiki is also a wonderful alternative to massage if you are touch‑sensitive, experience anxiety, or have trauma around undressing and prefer to remain fully clothed during your session

Frequently asked questions

Reiki is a gentle, energy-based healing practice that helps bring the body and mind into a state of deep relaxation and balance. It works by channeling universal life-force energy through the hands, either with light touch or just above the body, to support physical, emotional, and energetic healing.

Reiki can help release stuck energy, calm the nervous system, ease emotional stress, and promote overall well-being. While it’s not a massage, many clients say it feels just as grounding, peaceful, and restorative.

You don’t have to fully understand how it works to benefit from it, Reiki simply meets you where you are.

The session is available in 30, 45, 60, or 75 minutes, depending on your needs. We will discuss how you're feeling and your intentions for the session. Each session can be tailored to focus on specific areas of the body or overall energy balancing. During the session, you’ll lie fully clothed on a massage table or sit in a chair. I will place my hands lightly on or just above your body in a series of positions. Many people feel warmth, tingling, or deep relaxation, and some even drift into a meditative or sleep-like state.

Wear comfortable clothing and take a few moments to set an intention for your session (e.g., relaxation, clarity, or emotional release). It’s also recommended to stay hydrated before and after your session, as energy work can stimulate the body’s natural detox processes.

Reiki can be helpful as a single session, especially when you need a reset, but it tends to work best over time. Many people start with a series of 3 sessions, spaced about 1–2 weeks apart, to gently unwind layers of stress and begin to notice lasting shifts. From there, a 6–session or 9–session series can support deeper patterns, chronic tension, or ongoing nervous system regulation, especially when you’re moving through big life changes.

After your first visit, we’ll talk about your goals and I’ll suggest a simple plan, whether that’s a one-time tune-up, a 3–session reset, or a 6– or 9–session series to support longer-term healing.

Yes, Reiki works well alongside other therapies and medical treatments. It’s a complementary healing practice that supports the body’s natural healing response and helps reduce stress, which can improve the effectiveness of other therapies. Reiki is not a replacement for medical care but an additional tool to promote overall well-being.
